California State University, Los Angeles, more often referred to as simply Cal State L.A., CSULA, or CSLA, is a public comprehensive university, situated in Los Angeles, which is the largest city in the US state of California and Western USA, as well as the 2nd largest city in the States, having a population estimated at a number of more than 3 million inhabitants, it urban area extending beyond the administrative city limits, the total population, including the urban area, being of over 14 million inhabitants, fact which makes it the 14th largest urban area in the world, affording it megacity status.
CSULA was founded in July, 1947, by an act of the California legislature, first starting as The Los Angeles State College, on the campus of Los Angeles City College. The institution adopted its current name in 1972, when it was awarded university status, and since then, the university has continuously grown, having today, an enrollment approximated at a number of 21 000 students, who come primarily from the greater Los Angeles area. CA State LA is academically organized into 6 colleges, with 50 academic departments and divisions, through which it offers its students various educational programs in numerous fields of study.
The athletic teams from CSULA are known as the Golden Eagles, who compete in NCAA Division II, in 11 sports, for both men and women, including in basketball, baseball, volleyball, tennis, soccer and track and field. Their distinctive colors are black and gold and their mascot is the Golden Eagle.
